It’s one thing to have gratitude for what makes you happy.
What’s a much more challenging task, and a more rewarding one...is learning how to have gratitude for our challenges.
Cultivating an overall gratitude for everything in life, even what’s challenging...might be the true spiritual source of a happy life.
Carl Jung, the Father of Humanistic Psychology shares:
‘Be grateful for your difficulties and challenges, for they hold blessings. In fact man needs difficulties; they are necessary for health, personal growth, individuation and self-actualisation.’
And I would actually add to that list… and necessary for happiness.
But how can we be genuinely grateful for our challenges?!

STEP-BY-STEP • No Small Feat – Finding Gratitude for Our Challenges
You will need:
- Some time to give
- Pen and paper
- An open, loving heart
- And a curious, open mind
- First, allow a challenge from your past to come to mind. Look for a challenge from your past that no longer seems challenging – one that you have overcome.
- What did you learn from that challenge? Write down everything you learned.
- How is your life different because you overcame that challenge? Write down whatever comes to mind.How has that challenge contributed to the Wonderful Person you are today? This isn’t the time to be modest. Really let yourself see that that challenge helped you grow, and strengthen and expand into the person you are today.
We’ll be expanding on this practice next Sunday.
Get ready to be supported into finding gratitude and blessings in even the challenges we don’t feel like we’ve completely overcome yet.
But for now...really take advantage of seeing all the lessons, gifts and growth you HAVE received from your challenges of the past!
